January 16, 2025
Please share a brief introduction about yourself and your business:
An artist since five years old; with a terminal degree and educated in Business, Art History, Arts Management and Theology; I have spent decades as an Arts Professional, Marketing and Communications executive, Speaker and Educator and it has always been my passion to connect people with art in the simplest and most accessible way possible. Therefore, I founded Q. Hendree Art Consulting in May 2012.
Who are your customers?
Corporate, commercial and government groups.
What was your background prior to starting your own business?
Arts executive, marketing and communications specialist.
What made you take the leap to start your own business?
I finally gave myself permission to step into my purpose and passion and what I had spent a lifetime preparing for.
Take us back to when you first launched your business; what was your marketing strategy to get the word out and did it go as planned?
Two months after starting my business I suffered a near fatal injury and my business lay dormant for ten years while I recovered. I reestablished it in early 2020 only to be interrupted by the Pandemic. My marketing strategy has largely been word of mouth and a lackluster social media presence. I’m hoping to change that with Entreprenista.
What is the biggest challenge you have encountered along the way so far and what have you learned from it?
Twice being interrupted and client acquisition have proven to be significant hurdles. I remain undated and committed to my business. Perseverance and faith are essential to my life and the core of my character success.
What accomplishment are the most proud of to date in your business?
Being multi certified locally and Federally as MBE, WBE, WOSB and HUBZone. In addition twice being featured by Grow with Google and STORYSmart Video News as the featured business. Finally being invited in 2023 and 2924 to sit on the Regional Arts Commission Artist Grant Review Panel.
What's next for your business? What can we expect to see over the next few years?
I hope to grow my client base to such an extent that it is my sole source of income that provides for a part time staff addition and a dedicated brick and mortar space where I can build, store and lease out a company corporate art collection.
What is your top productivity tip?
Organization is key for me. List making is crucial as is widely adhering to it while allowing for strategic and beneficial interruptions.
On the flip side, how do you avoid burnout?
As a licensed and ordained Christian Minister I rely on my faith and relationship with God to order my steps, keep things in perspective and provide me rest.
What is your approach to work-life balance / integration?
Defined tines and spaces to work, play and live.
What is one thing you wish you had known when you started your Entreprenista journey?
Self employment taxes!
When hiring, what is your go-to interview question?
If you don’t know something what do you do?
If you've raised capital for your business already, what are some of your best tips or lessons learned?
In the grants I’ve received my key has been to answer the questions asked fully while being succinct and honest.
What's the one app on your phone you absolutely cannot live without and why?
