Please share a brief introduction about yourself and your business:

Hi, I’m Melissa Armstrong, a CPA based in Denver, CO and Certified Public Accountant, Founder & Outsourced Controller of Capitalized Consulting, LLC. With a solid background in accounting and a knack for problem-solving, I thrive on helping organizations streamline their financial processes and achieve their goals. I’m passionate about leading teams and building strong client relationships, and I bring a bilingual advantage in Spanish and English to the table. From managing multi-million dollar operations to navigating complex compliance challenges, I’m dedicated to delivering practical solutions and fostering a positive, results-driven environment.

Who are your customers?

Small to mid-size businesses with annual gross revenue of $500K or more looking for an accounting and finance partner to help them manage their accounting, actually understand their financials, and serve as an advisor and sounding board for their business needs.

What was your background prior to starting your own business?

Prior to founding Capitalized Consulting, I worked in public accounting, finance, and client advisory services for 21 years. My most recent role was as corporate controller for a family-owned business in the heavy-construction equipment industry with annual consolidated revenue of $500M+.

What made you take the leap to start your own business?

I decided to start my own business so I could create a life that is aligned with my values, passions, and dreams. I love serving clients and being an advisor and business partner to them. Having my own business allows me the flexibility to be exactly that, while also being intentional about creating more room for the life component of my personal work-life balance equation.

Did you always know you wanted to be an entrepreneur?

Deep down I always wanted to be an entrepreneur, but not always consciously. There was a desire within me to create something. I didn't necessarily think that I would start my own accounting practice, but something in me was stirring and pushing me to questions some key areas of my life. Clarity came to me this last July, when I finally pressed pause and took the time to think about what I really wanted out of my career.

Take us back to when you first launched your business; what was your marketing strategy to get the word out and did it go as planned?

The first thing I did was create my logo with open AI and announce to my network via IG and Linked In that I was launching my own practice. My network immediately responded offering words of encouragement, asking me for 1:1 sessions to learn more about my service offering and identify ways they could support my business. Some have gone as far as to invite me to networking events or even hiring me as consultant.

What is the biggest challenge you have encountered along the way so far and what have you learned from it?

Having to do everything myself is the biggest challenge I have faced so far. Some of these challenges I've been able to overcome with a little help from friends and colleagues. In the case of IT challenges, the absolute bane of my existence, it became obvious really quick that I needed professional help. Surprisingly enough, I was able to find expert support for a reasonable monthly fee that is worth every single penny!

What accomplishment are the most proud of to date in your business?

Going with my gut about my website. Some people in my network told me I didn't need a website, that our business comes from word of mouth. Others told me to save myself the money and figure out the code for creating my site with use of open AI. I know that a website developer can be expensive, especially when starting out. I do believe, though, that you only get the chance to make a first impression once. I was lucky to have a website developer in my network and group of friends. My social capital was vast enough that it afforded me a deep discount on my website design fees. Going with my gut on this one paid off. Everyone who has seen my website has simply loved it and it has helped me get clarity on my service offering, branding, pricing, and ideal customer.

Do you have any recent wins from the last year that you'd like to celebrate with our community?

My biggest win in the last year was jumping in with both feet and starting my new venture.

What's next for your business? What can we expect to see over the next few years?

I want to grow my business to $200K in 1-2 years and be able to help other women grow, either by hiring them as contractors for my business or forming business partnerships that are profitable for both parties.

What is your top productivity tip?

Set daily goals and block your time to achieve them.

On the flip side, how do you avoid burnout?

Rest. Drink water. Eat well. Practice the pause to reflect. Listen to your gut, it never lies.

What is your approach to work-life balance / integration?

Schedule time for self-care and personal activities that bring you joy.

When hiring, what is your go-to interview question?

Sometimes it's hard to gauge the level of expertise a candidate has. Have one or two role-specific questions to help you test their knowledge without turning it into a test. Their answer to the right question could give you insight into their technical knowledge, as well as their EQ.

What's the one app on your phone you absolutely cannot live without and why?

Outlook is my bestie so I can reply to emails on the go. Teams and Zoom are also key to be able to participate in meetings when I can't be at my desk.

What is your favorite business tool or solution and why?

Canva is my absolute favorite right now. It's made posting to social media in a professional, branded way very manageable and a lot less daunting.
