What was your background prior to starting your own business?
Before establishing my own skincare line, Truly Flawless Skin Care, I devoted 27 years to the skincare industry, honing my expertise and building a wealth of experience. During that time, my specific roles or areas of skincare I specialize in facials, hair etc.
What made you take the leap to start your own business?
I wanted to create a brand that caters to people of all skin types while also allowing me to spend more time with my kids and pursue my passion for skincare. What motivated me to take the leap and start your own brand is my passion and love for skincare.
Take us back to when you first launched your business; what was your marketing strategy to get the word out and did it go as planned?
When I first launched Truly Flawless Skin Care, my marketing strategy focused on building a strong online presence, leveraging social media, and connecting directly with potential customers. I used platforms like Instagram and Facebook to showcase the effectiveness of my products, share skincare tips, and engage with my audience. Word-of-mouth and referrals also played a key role in spreading awareness.
While I had a plan in place, there were definitely challenges along the way. Some strategies worked better than expected, while others required adjustments. The learning process helped me refine my approach and better understand what resonated with my customers.
What is the biggest challenge you have encountered along the way so far and what have you learned from it?
One of the biggest challenges I’ve encountered so far is standing out in the highly competitive skincare industry. With so many brands on the market, it was crucial to find ways to differentiate Truly Flawless Skin Care and build trust with customers.
I’ve learned that authenticity, consistency, and education are key. By staying true to my vision, providing high-quality products, and educating customers about skincare, I’ve been able to build a loyal community. Challenges have taught me resilience and the importance of adapting while staying committed to my mission.
What accomplishment are the most proud of to date in your business?
One of the accomplishments I’m most proud of is building Truly Flawless Skin Care into a brand that genuinely helps people feel confident in their skin. Seeing customers share their success stories and how our products have improved their skincare journey is incredibly rewarding.
Another proud moment was launching my own line after 27 years in the industry—it was a leap of faith, but it allowed me to create something meaningful while also having more time with my kids. The journey has been challenging, but every milestone, big or small, makes it all worth it.
What's next for your business? What can we expect to see over the next few years?
In the coming years, Truly Flawless Skin Care is focused on expanding our product line to address even more skincare needs and introducing innovative solutions. We’re also planning to enhance our customer experience by offering personalized skincare consultations and expanding our reach through partnerships with wellness influencers and retailers.
Additionally, I’m excited about continuing to prioritize sustainability and clean ingredients in our products, as we aim to make a positive impact not just in skincare, but in the environment as well. As the business grows, we remain committed to helping people feel confident in their skin while providing a brand they can trust.
What is your top productivity tip?
One of my top productivity tips is to prioritize your tasks based on importance, not just urgency. I start each day by identifying the most critical tasks and focusing on them first, which helps me stay on track without getting overwhelmed by smaller, less impactful tasks.
Another tip is to create a routine and stick to it. Consistency is key in both personal and professional life. By establishing a daily rhythm, I’ve been able to stay productive while maintaining balance between work and family life.
Lastly, don’t be afraid to delegate. Trusting others with responsibilities allows me to focus on the bigger picture while ensuring everything runs smoothly.
On theflip side, how do you avoid burnout?
To avoid burnout, I focus on maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Setting clear boundaries between work and personal time is crucial, and I make sure to take regular breaks throughout the day to recharge. Spending quality time with my kids and engaging in activities that help me relax—like reading, exercising, or meditating—helps me stay grounded.
I also ensure I’m delegating tasks when needed and don’t hesitate to ask for help. It's important to recognize when I need support and give myself permission to take a step back. By staying mindful of my limits and practicing self-care, I can continue to work with energy and passion without burning out.
What is your approach to work-life balance / integration?
My approach to work-life integration is centered around flexibility and being intentional with my time. As a business owner and a mother, I prioritize both my professional goals and my family commitments, and I try to blend the two in a way that works for me. I create structured work hours but also leave room for spontaneity and quality time with my kids.
I believe in setting clear boundaries so that work doesn't spill over into family time, but I also embrace the idea that work and life can coexist harmoniously when managed thoughtfully. Finding moments to unwind and recharge is just as important as working hard, so I make sure to integrate self-care practices into my routine to keep my energy high and my mindset positive.
What is one thing you wish you had known when you started your Entreprenista journey?
One thing I wish I had known when I started my entrepreneurial journey is the importance of patience and persistence. When you’re building something from the ground up, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and expect immediate results. But the truth is, success takes time, and there will be plenty of ups and downs along the way.
I’ve learned that staying patient, trusting the process, and not being afraid to make adjustments when things don’t go as planned is key to long-term success. Building a business is a marathon, not a sprint, and embracing the journey has helped me grow both personally and professionally.
When hiring, what is your go-to interview question?
My go-to interview question is, "Can you tell me about a time when you faced a challenge at work and how you overcame it?" This question helps me gauge a candidate's problem-solving skills, resilience, and ability to handle adversity—qualities that are important in a fast-paced business environment like ours.
A few other hiring tips I’ve learned along the way include:
Look for cultural fit – Skills can be taught, but fitting into the company culture is essential for long-term success.
Check for passion – Passion for the work you do often translates to higher motivation and better results.
Ask for examples – Behavioral questions that prompt candidates to provide real-life examples of their experience give you a clearer picture of how they’ll perform in the role.
Trust your instincts – Sometimes, your gut feeling about a candidate can tell you a lot about how they’ll mesh with the team and contribute to your business goals.
If you've raised capital for your business already, what are some of your best tips or lessons learned?
While I haven’t raised capital for Truly Flawless Skin Care yet, I understand the importance of being prepared and strategic when considering funding options. If I were to pursue raising capital, my tips would be:
Know Your Numbers – Investors want to see that you understand your business’s financials, including revenue projections, expenses, and profitability. Be ready to demonstrate that you have a solid plan for managing growth.
Build a Strong Network – Relationships matter. Cultivating connections with potential investors or mentors can make a big difference when it’s time to seek funding.
Tell Your Story – Investors aren’t just looking for great numbers; they want to understand your vision, passion, and why your business matters. Clearly articulate why your brand stands out and how it fits into the market.
Be Ready for Rejection – Raising capital is not always easy. Be prepared for setbacks, and learn from each experience to improve your pitch.
Choose the Right Investors – It’s not just about the money. The right investors should align with your business values and vision, offering support beyond just financial backing.
Do you have a co-founder? If so, how did you find the right one for you and what are your best partnership tips?
Yes, I am a "Mamaprenista" in the sense that I’m a mother who actively balances running a business and being present for my kids. My best advice for managing both would be to set clear boundaries and prioritize your time effectively.
In business, it’s easy to get caught up in tasks, but making intentional time for family—whether it’s during work breaks or scheduling family days—keeps me grounded. I also rely on having a flexible schedule and delegating when necessary, so I don’t get overwhelmed.
Most importantly, don’t forget to carve out time for yourself. Taking care of your own well-being is just as crucial for managing both family and business successfully.
What's the one app on your phone you absolutely cannot live without and why?
The one app I absolutely cannot live without is my calendar app. As a business owner and a mother, managing my time effectively is crucial, and my calendar helps me stay organized. I use it to schedule both work and family activities, ensuring I never miss important meetings or family events. It helps me balance my responsibilities, stay on top of deadlines, and prioritize my day.
Being able to sync across all my devices also keeps everything in sync, which makes staying organized and productive much easier. It's a game-changer for managing a busy schedule.
What is your favorite business tool or solution and why?
My favorite business tool is a project management platform like Asana or Trello. These tools help me stay organized by allowing me to break down tasks, set deadlines, and track progress across different projects. They’re essential for keeping my team aligned and ensuring nothing falls through the cracks.
I love how intuitive they are, making collaboration easier by providing visibility into everyone's tasks and progress. As a business owner, this helps me manage not only day-to-day operations but also long-term goals, ensuring that we're always moving forward efficiently.
What advice do you have for aspiring Entreprenistas?
My advice for aspiring Entreprenistas is to stay authentic, be resilient, and embrace the journey. Starting a business is challenging, but staying true to your vision and passion is key. Don't be afraid to fail—each setback is a learning opportunity that can lead to growth and improvement.
It's also important to build a solid support system, whether it's mentors, family, or a team. Surrounding yourself with people who believe in you can make all the difference. And finally, remember to prioritize self-care and work-life balance. Burnout is real, and taking care of yourself allows you to show up as your best self for your business and your loved ones.
