Kwandaa Roberts Shares Her Success Story Making Modern Dollhouses

[Template] Website Member Feature Banner (1)

Hi, Kwandaa! Please share a brief introduction about yourself and your business:

I’m Kwandaa Roberts, an OB/GYN and interior designer who sells high-style, modern dollhouses called Tiny House Calls.

What excites you about being an Entreprenista League member?

I have found networking with other women entrepreneurs to be one of the most important tools in launching my business.

So innovative, Kwandaa! What made you take the leap to start your own business?

I remodeled a dollhouse for my daughter five years ago and was instantly hooked. When I couldn’t find the modern miniatures I was looking for, I decided to create a line of my own.

What was your background prior to starting your own business?

I am a practicing OB/GYN. After my first dollhouse went viral, I got a design certification and started an interior design business.

Such an inspiration! Did you always know you wanted to be an entrepreneur?

Nope. This has taken me completely by surprise but it’s never too late to start a new dream.

We completely agree! Take us back to when you first launched your business, what was your marketing strategy to get the word out and did it go as planned?

I have a very engaged IG audience of 88K and have had lots of press over the years. So far my marketing has been all organic, but I joined this community in hopes of finding people who can help me market strategically.

We have such a supportive group that will definitely help you! What is the biggest challenge you have encountered along the way and what did you learn from it?

Finding a manufacturer was very difficult. Learning all of the things I don’t know about business is hard. Trying to get funding is hard. So what I learned, is that I’m really dedicated to this business because I keep doing hard things.

What is the accomplishment you are the most proud of to date?

Well, it’s cliché but I’m a single mom by choice of two so my kids are my greatest accomplishment. Also, to attempt to empty my savings to start a business at 50.

Do you believe in work/life balance? What are some of your best tips?

Well, I believe in it, but I haven’t achieved it.

There’s always time! What’s a piece of advice you can share that you wish you’d known when you first started your Entreprenista journey?

I would have attempted to secure funding in the beginning instead of self-funding.

What have you achieved recently that you’d like to celebrate with our community?

I just finished what I consider to be a successful crowdfund.

What’s next for your business? What can we expect to see over the next few years?

Launching my full e-commerce store, offering a full range of miniatures, opening a brick-and-mortar shop with a model that can be franchised.
