Andrèa Thornton's Journey to Founding a Boutique Public Relations Agency
August 9, 2024
Hi, Andrèa! Please share a brief introduction about yourself and your business:
I'm Andrèa, the brains behind Prolific Public Relations. Before opening the doors to my own boutique agency, I spent over two decades crafting strategic communications, navigating media relations, and diving deep into the digital landscapes of some of the world's top brands. I learned the ropes during my time at Edelman and Ketchum public relations agencies. My work has even been recognized in the Journal of Marketing Communications. But it's not just about big corporations and fancy research studies – I'm fueled by a passion for brand strategy, helping others succeed, and fostering collaborations. Lately, I'm very excited about Prolific Events. I love making memories and Prolific Events is our way of turning ordinary gatherings into unforgettable experiences and opportunities to shine the light on brands. I'm always thrilled to connect with like-minded professionals in the industry and I have a passion for helping women entrepreneurs.
We love that passion! Who are your customers?
We love partnering with businesses that prioritize brand strategy and the creation of impactful branding events. While we work with clients across all business sectors, we have a particular fondness for women-founded organizations. Our ideal clients are forward-thinking companies that understand the importance of cultivating a strong brand identity and leveraging strategic marketing initiatives to enhance their brand presence. Typically, our clients have an annual revenue ranging from mid to high six figures to multimillion-dollars and possess at least three-five years of business experience, demonstrating a solid foundation and commitment to their brand growth. We value creativity, innovation, and collaboration, and we're dedicated to partnering with our clients to bring their brand vision to life through immersive and memorable event experiences and strategies.
What was your background prior to starting your own business?
I’m a branding expert. Before I founded Prolific Public Relations, I spent two decades creating powerful brand concepts for some of the top Fortune 500 companies through my work in agency public relations. I have extensive experience across multiple service industries including professional services, consumer products and services, technology, healthcare, entertainment, and consumer brands.
What made you take the leap to start your own business?
In 2017, I was laid off from my dream career when the company decided to move communications operations offshore. I felt it was God's way of saying, 'OK now's the time to take that leap of faith.' Now it's my mission to give entrepreneurs and small businesses the tools, tips, and strategies that iconic brands use to level up their business and increase revenue.
Did you always know you wanted to be an entrepreneur?
No! I was a corporate girl and I thought I would work in a corporate setting and then retire with a 401K. Boy did the universe have something else in mind for me!
We're so excited that you found your path! What is the biggest challenge you have encountered along the way so far and what have you learned from it?
One of the biggest challenges I've faced was transitioning from a corporate background to building a team and implementing infrastructure. Back-end operations seemed like a mysterious, magical realm I hadn't ventured into before. Through this experience, I've learned the importance of having a coach and a supportive team, regardless of one's level of experience.
What's next for your business? What can we expect to see over the next few years?
We're ramping up for some serious activity! We're not just continuing to support businesses and entrepreneurs — though that's still a big part of our mission. We're expanding Prolific Events and launching a new 90-Day Business Incubator. It's all about providing startups and new brands with the step-by-step guidance they need from seasoned pros. It's innovation meets inspiration and we're beyond to be leading the charge with a secret new partner that will be announced later this year.
On the flip side, how do you avoid burnout?
Self-care days; I have Spa Envy on rotation and really good friends who understand and support me.
What is your approach to work-life balance / integration?
God, family, self-care, and business in that order.
